Project Summary

Borne out of a period of environmental devastation caused by the 2021 Volcanic eruption and the pressing issue of food insecurity in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a group of volunteers founded what is now known as Eco Home Gardens Inc. The overarching goal of Eco Garden is to actively involve more women in sustainable agriculture and business development while fostering a legacy of environmental preservation. Thus, the project aims to:

  • Provide training to a minimum of 50 women, enabling them to initiate and sustain eco-friendly home gardens from January to December 2023.
  • Establish a demonstration plot to educate participants in the core principles of nurturing, caring for, and managing seedlings and crops cultivated within the project.
  • Empower at least 5 women's groups in the realm of product development by utilising yields from their home gardens and local produce.

RESULTS TO BE ACHIEVED

  • A collaboration formed between Eco Home Gardens and various women's groups to execute an awareness campaign focusing on conservation, food security, nutrition, and the empowerment of women as key players in these areas.
  • The establishment of fresh, eco-friendly home gardens is anticipated. As participants gain experience, they are expected to introduce the concept of sustainable gardening to their peers and associates.
  • Ongoing research is dedicated to assessing the significance of sustainable agriculture.
  • Enhancing the visibility of both the SVGCF and the Eco Home Gardens brand.
  • Project ownership and long-term sustainability are fostered through the "each one teaches one" approach, both within group dynamics and on an individual level.
