Project Summary

The Sandwatch Bequia, initiated at Bequia Community High School, is a local branch of the global Sandwatch Foundation. Originating in the early 1990s, their mission is to empower communities through their youths in sustainable living, environmental conservation, protection and activism through scientific methods, problem-solving and critical thinking an providing valuable information for development and mitigating changes that may affect our future. This project aims to continue the work with students and volunteers to collect data on changes in the local environment, such as water pollution, sand movement, and coastal erosion, along with documenting coastal flora and fauna. The key objectives are:

  • Over a span of two months, acquire, assess, and secure equipment for the purpose of gathering scientific data regarding coastal changes.
  • Provide training and involve volunteers/students in data collection, analysis, and equipment handling for a minimum of two weeks, utilising field practice, demonstrations, videos, and real-life simulations, aiming to achieve an accuracy level within a 2% margin of error.
  • Conduct systematic bi-monthly data collection on coastal changes for a period of twelve months, employing scientific methodologies to ensure 100% accuracy and objectivity at all times.
  • Procure and evaluate the specified technological equipment within two months, and within one week, train and engage volunteers in data entry, storage, dissemination, and advocacy, striving for a proficiency level of at least 90%.

RESULTS TO BE ACHIEVED

  • Foster scientific abilities and critical thinking in both students and the broader public.
  • Supply dependable and precise data to support decision-making in matters related to environmental preservation, conservation, sustainability, and development feasibility assessments, with a specific focus on coastal regions.
  • Monitor alterations in the plant and animal life found along the island's coastlines and beaches.
